Choosing Baby Names....

These days people choose names that are special and much more thought goes into the choice than some years ago when parents tended to choose a name that was in the family or perhaps their extended family.

More and more we are searching for names that stand out from the crowd and here are some useful guidelines to bear in mind:

• Rule number one is to look up the meanings for your name choices. You don't want to pick a great sounding name only to find its meaning is dull, strange or unflattering in any way. On the other hand, a name that projects values or attributes your family can relate to may hit the spot very nicely.

• Select a name that may be useful in school or later careers.

Avoid names that kids will get teased about.

• Names to honor a family member can possibly be a second or third name.

• Dig into history for some fascinating names.

• As time moves on names that were unusual become common place so watch out for these trends.

• Many people choose names of movie stars and celebrities. But be careful to look at who you are naming your child after - what they stand for, their background and where that person appears to be going in life. Remember it is the child that will carry the name and not you.

• Some biblical names stand out from the crowd and have nice sound to them.

• If it's not a family name it could be a name that projects a family tradition. Like if a family is musical using the name of a famous musician.

• Dig into the names used in the country of your ancestors - some old names can actually have a modern ring to them. This also helps to preserve your heritage within your own family and in the wider world.

• Possibly pick a name but spell it different to the normal way - but don't make it hard to spell.

• Be very careful to consider what a name will be shortened to. You don't want to choose a great name and have it shortened to one that will cause teasing. Whatever direction you take, I suggest that you spend a lot of time in selecting a new baby's name. Write down all your possibilities, discuss them and go through a careful process of narrowing down the list until you are happy. Your child will live with this name.
